4th Day of Step Up

For today, we all recorded a 3 minute session of our voice and story onto a microphone. We later then listened to our voices and made some of the advices of the adjustments that we’ll be making next time.

Fourth Day on Step-Up

Today we did some practice recording from stories that we researched or watched. I’ve watched about Oprah Winfrey. She talked about struggles and how to surrender it. After recording, we as a group, listened to each other’s recording and shared our opinions on it. I feel like I did bad on it, so I’ll totally improve next time. I’m looking forward to next week!

STEP-UP Week 8 Day 1 – Substance Abuse Prevention & Restricted Access to the Internet

STEP-UP Week 8 Day 1

Theme: Substance Abuse Prevention

While researching this weeks theme, I came across a bunch of rhyming anti-drug slogans and this one (shoot for the stars not your arms) immediately put an idea in my head about what I would design. The original image of the arm reaching out was showing some bruises on it, and I thought it would be a good fit for the slogan I found, so I cut it out and found the other imagery for the slogan (starry background, hypodermic needle, blood spatter, American flag, etc…). Most of the research I did was mentioning that abstaining from drug use is the most effective way to prevent addiction or abuse, so I included the hashtag ‘#abstinenceIsTheOnlyWay’ which could be used in a social media campaign (maybe it already has been?) to prevent substance abuse. When I finished composing my image, I exported a JPG which I pulled back into Photoshop, made it black and white, then applied a filter to “pixellate” it, and finally revealed portions of the original design to create the effect which I think suggests how out of focus life can get when people are using drugs. The hand is becoming more naturally colored and clearer as it gets closer to the stars and further away from the needle.

Office Internet has been restricted… Quite a few of our interns have trouble focusing while at work, so I have now restricted access to the internet during main work hours. 9 – 10AM & 2 – 3PM are times when the internet is available. Sorry everyone, but I saw too little work being done so you’ve lost some freedom, welcome to work!

STEP-UP 2017 Week 4 Day 2 – Violence Prevention

Our topic this week is Violence Prevention. Violence comes in many forms, which the Graphic Team took some time to research before moving on to produce their images. I chose Domestic Violence as my topic, and here is my image. Typically, people in domestically violent situations do not report them to the authorities or even their friends or family, hence the censor bars over her eyes. The ‘messy make up’ effect over her mouth is to highlight her expression and the message, “Some people are not good for me, no matter how much I love them.”, is to drive the message home that even though you love someone, they can be hurtful towards you (whether physically, mentally, or emotionally) and sometimes, however difficult it may be to get out of that relationship, it is the best solution to the problem.

STEP-UP 2017 Week 3 Day 3 Graphics Team

Today we were finishing our Transportation themed designs. After lunch I had a talk with everyone about the importance of cleanliness in the workplace, Chou and I both gave some examples of what other work experiences we’ve had were like, then I had the Graphics Team clean up the AMA office spaces. Starting next week the teams (Audio, Video, and Graphic) will take turns cleaning up the office spaces, including the lobby and grass in front of the building. Here’s my newest Transportation themed design.

STEP-UP 2017 Trip to Mall of America

This week’s theme is ‘transportation’ and it seemed like a ‘no-brainer’ that we’d literally put transportation to use to get everyone familiar with what transportation is. At the beginning of the week, the Graphic Design Team read about what transportation is according to the Bicultural Active Living Lifestyle website and began to produce design projects to visualize what transportation is. So today, we planned a trip to the MOA where all of our interns took the bus to the light rail, ultimately ending up at the Mall. This was an opportunity for everyone to familiarize themselves with the public transportation system available in Minneapolis and of course have a bit of fun at the Mall once we arrived. The audio team even brought recording equipment which alerted the security staff at the Mall, so I was fortunate enough to see this and spent some time to talk to them about what we are doing. They were fine with this, but recommended that in the future we contact them first so they are not alarmed with our presence. Additionally, they offered to provide Mall staff as guides and access to restricted areas, which would be pretty cool to see. Otherwise the trip was uneventful, everyone was able to get their own lunch as they wish and we all met back at the Mall transit station before departing as a group. We took the light rail back downtown and then the bus back to the office, arriving just in time for everyone to check out for the day.

STEP-UP 2017 Week 3 Day 1

Today we learned about what transportation is according to the Bicultural Active Living Lifestyle website. Using different blending modes and a ton of layers, I created the following image for your consideration:
